Chapter Twenty

Hayley

I had been surprised when I realized that Ryan was taking us back to the cabin. When I questioned the safety of our bolt-hole, he had shrugged his shoulders dismissively. Telling me that if Benjamin wanted us dead or captive then he would never have let us leave.

“He only ever wanted Conrad, H.” Ryan’s words hit me like a hammer.

I knew that Ryan was right, I had been nothing more than bait; used to lure Conrad into Benjamin’s hands. I still couldn’t believe that Eliza had betrayed me to Benjamin though. Perhaps I was simply naïve, but a tiny part of me still refused to accept that she had been party to my capture.

When we arrived back at the cabin, I was pleased to see that the clean-up crew had worked their magic, and the six bodies were nowhere to be found.

I felt drained—both emotionally and physically. But I needed answers, and since Ryan had showed up to Benjamin’s house with Conrad, I knew he would be able to provide me with at least part of the story.

While Ryan poured us both a large glass of bourbon each, I sat down at the kitchen table, and tried to make sense of the last few hours.

“Ryan, what happened? Did Eliza betray me?”

Ryan’s face paled slightly as he placed the glass in front of me. I wrapped my cold fingers around the glass, and looked up at him expectantly, letting him know that I wasn’t about to back down. I needed answers.

With a heavy sigh, Ryan leaned over the table, making full eye contact with me, and he laughed bitterly.

“I never thought I’d be reluctant to use information which could make you hate him.”

Never breaking away from his gaze, I bit my lower lip hard enough to draw blood.

“Ryan, tell me?”

“He killed her, Hayley. Conrad killed the redhead—I guess that was your Eliza.”

My eyes dropped to the surface of the table, idly following the patterns in the wood grain. It was almost as though I was trying to hypnotize myself out of hearing this latest revelation about the man who had stolen my soul.

“She’s dead?” I whispered.

“I’m sorry, H.” Ryan made no move to touch me, and I was surprised to discover that a small part of me had been hoping that he would reach out to offer me a comforting hand.

“Why would he do that?” I asked; bewildered.

Ryan sipped at his drink. “Because he was losing it without you, H. The bond that he created with you is going to undo him. I know that you don’t want to hear this, but it’s probably much better for the world if Benjamin does kill Conrad.”

“Are you fucking serious, Ryan? You’re asking me to just sit back and let him die?”

“I’m honestly not sure what else you want me to do, Hayley. He could destroy the entire world. You can’t save him just because it hurts to lose him.”

I slammed my glass against the table. “Do you really think that Benjamin is going to be any better for this world than Conrad?”

He didn’t reply.
